Mumbai (until 1996: Bombay) is the largest city in India and the capital of the state of Maharashtra. According to the 2001 census, the city had a population of 11,914,398. The United Nations estimates the city’s population at 19,980,000 in 2018. The UN also expects the city to have approximately 24.6 million inhabitants by 2030. The Greek cartographer Ptolemy mentioned this in the second century AD. The city was known as Heptanesia, which is Ancient Greek for “a place of seven islands.” The Portuguese called it “Bom Bahia,” “Buon Bahia,” or “Bambain,” Portuguese for “Good Bay.” In 1538, they also called it Boa-vida, “the island of the good life.” When the British later gained control of India, the name was anglicized to Bombay, although Marathi and Gujarati speakers knew the city as Mumbai.
